FAQs Dermal Filler
If you are considering dermal filler treatment then here are a few common questions that arise from people considering treatment for the first time. We welcome all our clients to book in for a free of charge consultation to go through any of these questions and to discuss your exact requirements.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are smooth injectable gels used to restore or add volume to the face. Fillers vary in density (thickness) which determines which area they can be used in and helps achieve the desired result, whether that is to provide lift or contouring, create symmetry, or enhance a particular feature such as the lips.
Many dermal fillers contain a synthetic compound that mimics the properties of a naturally occurring sugar molecule. This particular molecule assists in skin firmness and smoothness, by providing a kind of supporting network for other important structural tissue components, at the same time drawing moisture to the area and holding onto it. Over time, our natural levels of this sugar diminish, which is where fillers can help – literally filling wrinkles and hollow areas from within.
Are dermal fillers safe?
Dermal fillers integrate with skin tissue and allow the free passage of vital elements including oxygen and hormones, resulting in healthy, natural-looking skin. Over time they are broken down by normal biological processes and removed from the body. No long-term problems have been recorded.
What can demal fillers be used for?
There are several uses for dermal fillers, including:
Smoothing wrinkles and folds
Lines/crow’s feet at the corner of eyes
Frown lines between the eyebrows
Vertical lines above the top lip
Smile lines from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth Lip enhancement
Adding fullness to the lip/skin border
Adding fullness to thin lips for a very natural look
Adding volume using thicker fillers
Filling sunken cheeks
Filling acne and other scars Fillers can also be used in the upper part of the face to treat expression lines – for instance, crow’s feet or forehead lines.
How do you chose which one to use?
The biggest difference between the various fillers available is the size of the particles used, the active ingredient and the quantity in each vial. For instance, we would suggest fillers with smaller particles for superficial lines and larger particle fillers for deeper wrinkles, restoring lost volume, skin folds and lips.

What does it feel like?
Fillers are injected into the the skin using a very fine needle or under the skin. Juvederm & Beletero contains Lidocaine, any discomfort is, therefore, minimal. For lip treatments, we can use an anaesthetic nerve block – which is similar to having a dental injection. Treatments take from 20 to 30 minutes, and results are instant.
How quickly will I see results from dermal fillers?
You will see immediate results from dermal filler injections
How long do the effects last?
This largely depends on the structure of the skin, lifestyle, age and the degree of perfection demanded by each individual patient. You can have additional touch-up treatments any time after your first treatment, However, generally speaking, to maintain the results you have achieved you’ll need a follow-up treatment after six to nine months for lines, wrinkles and folds, and after six months for lips.
Are there any side effects?
Some injection-related reactions occasionally occur, such as transient redness, swelling, pain, itching and tenderness at the injection site. However, these resolve themselves after a day or two for wrinkle treatments, and after a few more days for lips treatments.
Other types of reactions are very uncommon, with just one in 15,000 people experiencing hypersensitivity reactions after having hyaluronic fillers.
